International Travel: Health Insurance

So you are going on vacation outside the United States with your family. Planning is quite a task. It’s to be your dream trip, right? There might be one other thing you want to consider that follows.

You will want to be the utmost prepared when taking your holiday vacation. You will first want your bags well packed for crossing the border. You will need your passports and all other required papers too. Of course you will talk far and wide about the plans for your dream vacation.  Things will probably go great being well prepared, and you shouldn’t have any worries.

There are a few other things you will want to consider. Statistics of travel among Americans show a number of concerns. While in the excitement of preparing, you will want to consider the Chubb Group survey, which shows that 70% worried what might happen with a medical emergency abroad. They also showed twice the worry about being mugged (30.8%) and three times the worry about being hurt by terrorist activity (23.4%).

What do you do if one of your family members gets very sick overseas?  Many will expect the same they find at home. That isn’t necessarily the case. Often your own healthcare coverage won’t cover you; only in the US and possibly Canada. The U.S. Department of Commerce says that about 27 million people catch flights on US airlines heading overseas and nearly 26 million come to the US each year, of which many don’t have proper medical coverage abroad. Usually, only those with international medical insurance have the needed coverage for anything from a simple local ambulance ride to a major evacuation in an emergency for care at a distant qualified medical complex.

Beyond that, some will even have added coverage to bring you from where you are back to the US when needed. The extent of policies available covers individuals, families, and groups for set ranges of time, and can be for an extended period. The group policies on a larger scale can cover employees of a company, missionaries, and even athletes abroad.

In the end, to have peace of mind while enjoying your holiday abroad, you want your bags well packed, your passport and other papers in order, for international travel. You will also want to be sure you have adequate insurance should medical emergencies occur abroad for you or any of your family.
